After RCB’s victory over CSK by 27 runs on Saturday, we now have the top 4 teams who will play in the IPL 2023 qualifiers – Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bengaluru. However, the picture is still unclear on which teams will play each other in the IPL 2024 playoffs. While KKR are assured of finishing the league stages at the top of the table – irrespective of their result in today’s match – and will play in Qualifier 1, SRH and RR are vying for the second spot in Qualifier 1, and the results of the game will have a bearing on where they finish the league stages on.
IPL 2024 Playoff Format Explained
Remember, getting a spot in Qualifier 1 benefits the teams as they will have two chances to make the playoffs. The winning team from Qualifier 1 will directly qualify for the IPL 2024 final, while the losing team in Qualifier 1 will move to Qualifier 2 to play the winner of the Eliminator for a spot in the IPL 2024 final. Teams finishing 3rd and 4th in the league stages will play the Eliminator, and the loser will be knocked out. The winner will move to Qualifier 2 to face the loser of Qualifier 1 and book the second IPL 2024 final spot.

How Can RR Qualify for Qualifier 1?
Rajasthan Royals are currently in second place in the league stages with 16 points and will face table-topper KKR in the final league game. With 19 points, KKR is assured to finish the league stage as the table-topper and will play in Qualifier 1. However, for RR to seal their place in Qualifier 1, they need to win and, more importantly, arrest their slump in form, which has seen them lose four matches in a row now.
If RR Win: If RR win against KKR, they will move to 18 points irrespective of an SRH win, RR will finish second in the points table.
If RR Lose: Since SRH will have played their final game before RR plays theirs, they will know what to do; if SRH lose, then even if RR lose, RR will make it to Qualifier 1. However, if SRH vs PBKS game is washed out and SRH gain one point, they will reach level on points with RR, and in such a scenario, SRH will seal the second spot because their NRR is already better than that of RR. to the second spot. So, if RR lose and SRH manage even one point, RR will finish third.
If the RR vs KKR game is washed out: If the RR vs KKR game is washed out, RR will get 17 points. However, if SRH have already won, they will also reach 17 points. Because SRH’s run rate is higher than that of RR, SRH will improve on the NRR with the win over PBKS, meaning RR will be pushed to the third spot, and SRH will finish second.
How Can SRH Qualify for Qualifier 1?
Suppose SRH Win: SRH are currently third with 15 points and need a win to have a chance to make the top two. If SRH win over PBKS, they will hope for RR to lose to KKR. In that case, SRH, with 17 points, will make the top two, while RR will be pushed down to 3rd with 16 points. If both SRH and RR win, RR will make the top two. In a scenario where SRH win, and the RR vs KKR game gets washed out, both SRH and RR will be level on point, but due to SRH’s far superior NRR, SRH will pip RR to the second spot.
If SRH Lose: If SRH lose to PBKS, then irrespective of whether RR loses or splits points, SRH will remain third and will have to play the Eliminator with RCB.
If the SRH vs. PBKS match is washed out: If the SRH vs. PBKS match is washed out, SRH will hope that RR loses. Even if the RR vs. KKR game also gets washed out, then RR will get one point, and that will be enough for them to seal a spot in Qualifier 1.
