“Team India will wear black armbands today in memory of former India fast bowler David Johnson, who passed away on Thursday,” the BCCI informed shortly before the start of play here at the Kensington Oval.

Johnson is survived by his wife and two children. An investigation is in progress to figure out if it was a case of suicide, the police said.

“It is believed that 52-year-old David Jude Johnson fell from his apartment in Kanaka Sri Layout in Kothanur. A UDR (unnatural death report) has been filed at the Kothanur police station,” a statement from the state police read.

“The body is taken for postmortem to the Ambedkar Medical College Hospital at Shampura main road,” it added.

Johnson played a Test each against Australia and South Africa and took three wickets, while he snaffled 125 wickets in 39 First-Class games and 41 dismissals in 33 List-A games for Karnataka between 1992-93 to 2001-02.

India Opt to Bat vs Afghanistan

India captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bat against Afghanistan at the Kensington Oval. The 2007 champions brought in left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav for fast bowler Mohammed Siraj who took just one wicket in the first round although he impressed with his economic performances on the slow wickets of the United States.

Afghanistan, who won their opening three games in the group stage, suffered a wake-up call in their last fixture, a humbling 104-run loss to the West Indies at St Lucia. The Rashid Khan-led side made one change bringing in Hazratullah Zazai for Karim Janat.
