Team India will embark on its T20 World Cup campaign on Wednesday, squaring off against Ireland at Nassau County Stadium in New York. It will be the fourth instance when the men in blue will take on the Irish side in an ICC event. So far, they have faced each other just once in the T20 World Cup but twice in the 50-over showpiece events.

IND vs IRE: Key Facts

Former Ireland captain William Porterfield got a fifty-plus score in all matches against India in an ICC event.

The T20 World Cup 2024 will be the first ICC event in which India will play against Ireland without MS Dhoni.

Here’s a look back at the two teams’ head-to-head match records in World Cups over the years.

T20 World Cup 2009

The only time India faced Ireland in a T20 World Cup was on June 10, 2009, in Nottingham. Zaheer Khan’s sensational 4-wicket haul helped India restrict the William Porterfield-led side to a paltry 112/8 in an 18-over aside game. In reply, Rohit Sharma top-scored with a 45-ball 52 as India chased down the target with 15 balls to spare.

ODI World Cup 2011

Back in 2011, The M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru hosted the two teams on March 6. Irish skipper starred with the bat, top-scoring with 104-ball 75. But his knock was overshadowed by Yuvraj Singh’s 5-wicket haul as the men in green were bundled out for 207. The ace all-rounder also smashed a half-century while the likes of Sachin Tendulkar (38), Virat Kohli (34), skipper MS Dhoni (34) and Yusuf Pathan (30) made notable contributions in India’s 5-wicket win.

ODI World Cup 2015

Four years later, the two sides locked horns in Hamilton, New Zealand. Ireland captain Porterfield was once again on the top of his game, scoring 67 off 93 balls while Niall O’Brien contributed with a run-a-ball 75. Ireland’s were bowled out for 259 after Mohammed Shami starred with figures of 3/41 while Ashwin returned 2/38. India had a blast while chasing the total at Seddon Park. The opening duo of Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan stitched a 174-run partnership while the latter went on to score an 85-ball hundred as India won the contest by 8 wickets and 79 balls to spare.

It was India’s ninth straight win while chasing a total in the 50-over format.
