Gautam Gambhir has been handed the rein of the Indian Cricket Team as he was appointed the head coach on Tuesday following the departure of former coach Rahul Dravid.

Gambhir, the former Indian opener, is set to bring his aggressive brand of cricket to the Men in Blue and will look to build a support team around his ethos of the games.

Gambhir has reportedly put forward the name of former Netherlands international Ryan ten Doeschate to the BCCI to be included in his staff.

The Dutchman worked alongside Gambhir at IPL side Kolkata Knight Riders, which the Indian southpaw mentored to a title triumph in the latest edition of the cash-rich T20 franchise tournament.

The Indian World Cup winner heaped praise on ten Doeschate terming him the most selfless player he has shared the dressing room with.

“When I talk about selflessness, I have never said this in 42 years of my career. And I wanted to say this. The greatest team man I ever played with, the most selfless human being, someone I can take a bullet for, someone who I can trust for life,” Gambhir said.

“I can tell you this because in 2011, my first game as a KKR captain, we only had four overseas players available. And this man had a fabulous 50-over World Cup. And we went in that game with only three overseas players. He was carrying drinks in that game with no disappointment on his face. He taught me selflessness. Ryan ten Doeschate,” he revealed.

Gambir joins an exclusive list of head coaches to take the helm of the men in blue after The Wall Dravid stepped down from the position after he led the Indian side to the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 title in the Caribbean, ending an 11-year wait for an ICC trophy and a 13-year drought of World Cups.

The T20WC triumph also marked the second time India managed to get their hands on the shortest-over format showpiece after the inaugural edition triumph all the way back in 2007 under the captaincy of the legendary MS Dhoni.
