The SRH vs GT wash-out in Hyderabad has ensured that Sunrisers Hyderabad became the third team to qualify for the IPL 2024 playoff and now there’s only one spot remaining and the RCB vs CSK encounter on Saturday at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium will decide which team makes it to the top 4. Here’s a look at the possible IPL 2024 playoff qualification scenarios and what the teams have to do:

IPL 2024 Playoff Qualification Scenarios

Kolkata Knight Riders [Q]- KKR have qualified and are at the top of the IPL 2024 points table with 19 points.

Remaining matches

  • RR vs KKR

The RR loss to PBKS has meant that KKR will now finish the IPL league stages as the table-toppers ensuring their place in Qualifier 1. This will mean KKR will have two chances to make the final. If they lose in Qualifier 1, they will move to Qualifier 2 and await the winner of the Eliminator to have one more crack at the final. Even if KKR lose their final game to RR, they will finish on 19 points and RR on 18. SRH, even if they win their two remaining games can also reach 18 points.

Rajasthan Royals [Q]- RR are currently placed second in the points table with 16 points.

Remaining matches

  • RR vs KKR

RR’s fourth loss on the trot and the departure of Jos Buttler (national duty) is proving to be a big headache for the Sanju Samson-led side. Even though they are assured of a playoff berth, another loss in their last league game against KKR would mean that will be pushed further down the points table and will have to play the Eliminator and Qualifier 2 to make the final. If RR manage to win over KKR, then they will finish in the top two, even if SRH win their final game. However, if RR lose to KKR and SRH win, then RR would be pushed down to third and if CSK win over RCB, there is a chance that RR find themselves in the 4th spot.

Sunrisers Hyderabad [Q]- SRH are currently placed third in the IPL 2024 points table with 15 points.

Remaining matches

  • SRH vs PBKS

SRH had to split the points with GT in Hyderabad, but that one point was all they need to ensure an IPL 2024 playoff qualification. With one more match to go – against PBKS – SRH will hope that the rain gods stay away and they try and take two points with the aim to finish in the top-two. if RR lose their final league game against KKR, then SRH, with a win over PBKS, can make the top-two thus ensuing a place in the Qualifier 1 and will have two chances of playing the playoff. If RR win, then even with victory over SRH, SRH won’t be able surpass RR on points.

Chennai Super Kings – CSK are currently placed fourth in the points table with 14 points

Remaining matches

  • RCB vs CSK

CSK’s equation is very simple. Win their final league game against RCB and seal the playoff spot by reaching the IPL 2024 playoff qualification benchmark of 16 points. If they lose, they need to ensure the margin of defeat is narrow (less than 18 runs if RCB post 200 or not concede defeat before 18.1 overs if their target to defend is 200), to keep their net run rate above RCB’s. An RCB win will take Faf du Plessis’ side level on points with CSK and then the NRR will come into play. In case of a washout and points are split. then RCB will be out eliminated and a CSK will make it through. And if SRH lose in their final game, then CSK can even finish higher than SRH.

Delhi Capitals: DC are currently placed fifth in the IPL 2024 points table with 14 points.

Remaining matches

  • DC vs LSG

Delhi Capitals’ league stage is done and dusted and they finish on 14 points in 14 matches – losing 7 and winning 7. They currently find themselves in the 5th place, in touching distance of the playoff, but they cannot do anything now, other than hope for other results to go their way. If CSK beat RCB, DC will be officially knocked out and if RCB beat CSK, RCB’s run rate will be better than that of DC. DC’s IPL 2024 campaign is as good as over even though they are still alive mathematically.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru – RCB are currently in sixth position in the points table with 12 points.

Remaining matches

  • RCB vs CSK

With their fifth win on the trot, RCB are making a late push for a playoff spot and it now boils down to their final league game against CSK – who are also fighting for the playoff spot. A loss will bring curtains to RCB campaign, and a win can earn them a playoff spot. But for that, RCB would need to beat CSK by more than 18 runs (if they score 200) or chase down a target of 200 in 18.1 overs to get their NRR over CSK’s.

Lucknow Super Giants – LSG are currently placed seventh in the IPL 2024 points table with 12 points.

Remaining matches

  • MI vs LSG

LSG let go of a golden opportunity to keep themselves in the thick of the action of IPL playoff race as their 19-run loss to Delhi Capitals have ensured that they would not be able to touch the playoff qualification benchmark of 16 points. With one game remaining, they can hope to get to 14 points, putting them level on points with the fifth-placed DC. But, due to LSG’s poor NRR it is highly unlikely that they will be able to surpass DC or RCB, CSK – all of whom could also end upon 14 points, LSG’s campaign, similar to DC’s, is as good as over even if they are alive mathematically.

Gujarat Titans – GT are currently placed 8th in the points table with 12 points.

Remaining matches

After splitting points in Ahmedabad and now Hyderabad GT end their IPL 2024 campaign on 12 points finishing 8th.

Punjab Kings – PBKS are currently 10th in the points table with 8 points.

Remaining matches

  • SRH vs PBKS

PBKS became the second team to be eliminated from the playoff race, and with one games remaining, they have moved from 10th to 9th after the win over RR. They will aim to avoid the wooden spoon this year by winning their final league game against SRH.

Mumbai Indians – MI are currently placed at the 10th spot in the points table with 8 points.

Remaining matches

  • MI vs LSG

Mumbai Indians officially become the first team to be eliminated from the IPL 2024 playoff race, and they will look to avoid the wooden spoon this year.
