PAK's Super 8 Qualification Hinges on Weather; NZ Knocked Out | T20 WC Qualification Scenarios Explained
Here’s a detailed look at the Super 8 Qualification Scenarios for the remaining teams in contention:

Afghanistan became the latest team to book a Super 8 berth in the T20 World Cup 2024 with a win over Papua New Guinea on Friday and with that, they have knocked one of the favorites New Zealand out of the competition as West Indies and Afghanistan are the two teams set to qualify for the Super 8 from Group C. In Group A, India have secured a passage to the Super 8, From Group B it’s Australia and South Africa from Group D who have made it to the Super 8 so far. Bangladesh with a win over the Netherlands are inching closer to a Super 8 spot from Group D, while England with a massive win over Oman are still in contention. As for Pakistan from Group A, their qualification hinges on the results of other games and the weather.

Here’s a detailed look at the Super 8 Qualification Scenarios for the remaining teams in contention:

Group A

India are already through to the Super 8, but the interesting battle for the second Super 8 berth from this group A features the USA and Pakistan. The USA with wins over Pakistan and Canada are one win away from booking a spot in the next stage. They play Ireland next at Lauderhill Florida today, but the catch here is the weather forecast for all the games in Lauderhill isn’t the greatest and there is big possibility of all the Lauderhill games being awash-out. In that case, USA will go through, irrespective of what Pakistan do in their final league game against Pakistan. The Florida area is under Areal Flood Watch and the 99 percent Cloud cover, 88 percent Probability of Precipitation and 53 percent Probability of Thunderstorms. Moreover it is expected to rain throughout the day as well, putting Pakistan’s chances of Super 8 qualification in jeopardy.

Pakistan play Ireland on Sunday, again at Lauderhill and if the USA-Ireland game is a washout or USA manages to beat Ireland, who have been very poor in this T20 World Cup, that will be curtains for Pakistan.

Ireland and Canada are also not technically out of the race of Super 8. If Canada manage to beat India they will reach 4 points and if USA, Pakistan and Ireland Lose their respective games, Canada can go through. Ireland are yet to register a win this tournament and with two games remaining – vs USA and Pakistan – wins can take them to 4 points and similar to Canada’s predicament, they will hope could hope to beat USA on NRR, if they manage to win their remaining two games.

Group B

Australia are through from this group, but England’s massive win over Oman last night has boosted their NRR. England bowled out Oman for 47 and chased down the target in just 3.1 overs. England’s next game is against the already knocked-out Namibia and assuming England win that fixture, they will go level on points with Scotland and on the basis of NRR England will go through. However, Scotland too have a game in hand, but that is against Australia. Australia are the firm favorites here, but Scotland can pull up a huge surprise by beating Australia and make the Super 8. If by any chance either one of those two games get washed out, then Scotland are better placed to make the Super 8, and England will be knocked out.

Group C

West Indies and Afghanistan have made it to the Super 8 from this group with the remaining three teams, Uganda, Papua New Guinea and shockingly New Zealand out of contention. New Zealand yet to open their account but with games remaining against Uganda and PNG – they are very likely to finish their campaign on four points. Afghanistan and West Indies will play each other on Tuesday to decide who tops the table in this group. However, because of the re-determined seedings for the Super 8s, Afghanistan, irrespective of were they finish in the Group, will be in Group 1 for Super 8s – clubbed with India, Australia and most likely Bangladesh.

Group D

South Africa are already through to the Super 8s, and Bangladesh with a win over the Netherlands last night are likely to be the second team from this group to qualify. The Netherlands though have one more game to go against Sri Lanka and if they win that game and if Nepal manage to beat Bangladesh, then the Netherlands will be in with a chance to pip Bangladesh for the second Super 8 spot from Group D. Nepal have two games remaining – vs South Africa and Bangladesh and if they manage to win both and Netherlands lose to Sri Lanka, Nepal will go through.
