Pakistan’s men’s cricket team failed to fire in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, which was played in the West Indies and USA last month. The Babar Azam-led team suffered shocking defeats against the USA and India in the Group A matches played on June 6 and 9 in Dallas and New York, respectively, to face a humiliating exit from the first round itself. After Men in Green failed to reach the Super 8s, PCB promised to bring radical changes to the Pakistan cricket team, and on Wednesday (July 10), it was reported that the cricket board had sacked former pacer Wahab Riaz and all-rounder Abdul Razzaq from the selection committee.
Razzaq was appointed to the selection committee for both men’s and women’s teams a few weeks ago but will no longer serve as a selector for the women’s team as well.
As per a report in ESPNCricinfo, the PCB is likely to reconstitute the nature of the selection committee, and a chief selector is expected to be reappointed again. Wahab was named chief selector last year but was removed from the role earlier this year, and he was officially appointed as one of seven selectors to a committee that had no chief at all.
The former pacer had travelled with the Pakistan side to the T20 World Cup as senior team manager, and he is likely to lose that job as well.
Babar to remain as captain?
After Pakistan’s horror show in the T20 World Cup 2024, many fans and experts of the game openly criticised Babar’s captaincy, and it remains to be seen if the 29-year-old right-handed batter retains his position as captain in the shortest format of the game or not.
The former world No. 1 T20I batter had stepped down from the captaincy of the Pakistani team in all three formats of the game last year after the 1992 champions failed to qualify for the semi-finals of the ODI World Cup 2023, but was appointed as T20I captain once again in March 2024 after a change in the Pakistan Cricket Board leadership.
