The Indian men’s cricket team might be moving on from the Rahul Dravid-era with a report claiming that the legendary batter is unlikely to put in his name for the head coach’s role even as BCCI has kept the door open for his return.
As per a report in The Times of India, Dravid, whose two-year contract was extended for a short term after it came to an end with the 2023 ODI World Cup, isn’t going to reapply for the position he has been keeping hold of since officially taking over in November 2021.
Recently, BCCI secretary Jay Shah revealed that the board is set to invite applications for the role of Indian men’s team head coach role meaning Dravid’s current tenure will end with the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup in June.
Dravid though can throw his hat back into the ring if he wishes to. Shah didn’t rule out the possibility of a foreign coach succeeding into the role.
“We cannot determine whether the new coach will be Indian or foreign. It will be up to the cricket advisory committee (CAC),” Shah told reporters in Mumbai.

For the record, Duncan Fletcher was the last foreigner to have been appointed as the head coach of the men’s cricket team whose tenure ended in 2015.
Meanwhile, Shah also clarified that the decision to exclude Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan from the list of centrally contracted players was taken by the selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar.
“You can check the constitution. I am just a convener (of selection meeting). That decision lies with Ajit Agarkar, even when these two players (Ishan and Iyer) who did not play domestic (cricket), the decision to drop them (from the central contracts list) was only his. My role is just to implement. And we have got new players (in place), like Sanju (Samson). Nobody is indispensable,” he said.
“No, I did not advise him anything. It was just a friendly talk that he should do well and I speak with all players like that,” he said.
“We have increased the pay anyway and also incentivised Test cricket. We had increased the pay by 100 per cent in 2022,” Shah added.
