Rohit Sharma Becomes Oldest Indian Captain To Score 1000 Runs In A Calendar Year
With 1001 runs to his name in 21 matches played so far across formats, Rohit (37 years, 144 days) is the oldest Indian captain to score 1000 runs in a calendar year.

Rohit Sharma is leading India in the ongoing first Test Bangladesh, which is taking place at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The 37-year-old right-handed batter opened for India in both innings but failed to do much with the bat. He scored six runs from 19 balls in the first inning and amassed a total of five runs from seven balls on Friday (September 20) in the second inning. But despite his flop show with the bat, Rohit managed to create history in the series opener.

By scoring a total of 11 runs, Rohit crossed the 1000-run mark in 2024, which helped him become the oldest Indian captain to score 1000 runs in a calendar year.

37 years, 144 days old Rohit has 1001 runs to his name in 21 matches played so far in 2024. He has scored 157 runs in three ODIs, 378 runs in 11 T20Is, and 466 runs in seven Tests for the Indian team.

In the list of batters with most runs in 2024, the Indian skipper is in the fifth position. Sri Lanka’s Pathum Nissanka tops the list with 1164 runs in 24 matches, and he is followed by Kusal Mendis, who has amassed a total of 1161 runs in 33 matches played so far across formats. Rohit’s opening partner Yashasvi Jaiswal is third in the list with 1099 runs, and Sri Lanka’s Kamindu Mendis is fourth with 1028 runs.

Rohit is also the only captain to score 1000 runs in 2024. The Indian skipper was in red-hot form during the ODI series played against Sri Lanka last month. He top-scored for the Men in Blue in all three matches played at R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. He also finished as the top scorer for India in the T20 World Cup 2024 and helped them end the 17-year-long wait for the second T20 World Cup title.

In his last Test for India against England, which was played at HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala from March 7 to 9, Rohit scored 103 runs from 162 balls in the first inning and helped India win the match by an innings and 64 runs.
