Tim Southee has decided to step down as captain of the New Zealand Test team, passing the leadership mantle to Tom Latham. Latham, who has led the side in nine previous matches, will now take charge full-time, including the upcoming tour to India. Southee, who debuted for New Zealand in 2008 and has taken 382 wickets in 102 Tests, will remain a key figure in the squad as a senior player.
The 35-year-old cited his desire to focus on his personal performance, stating, “I’ve always tried to put the team first throughout my career and believe this decision is best for the team.” He added that his focus will now be on returning to peak form and contributing to New Zealand’s success on the field.
Latham, set to lead a 15-man squad to India, takes the reins after Southee’s 14-Test stint as captain, which included six wins, six losses, and two draws since December 2022. Despite stepping down, Southee emphasised his continued support for Latham and the younger players, saying, “I’ll be there to support Tom, as he has done for me over the years.”
NZ coach Gary Stead praised Southee for his leadership and selflessness, noting, “Tim’s made the decision with the team’s best interests at heart. He’s a fantastic player and leader, and we still see him playing a major role in our Test side.”
New Zealand Cricket CEO Scott Weenink echoed these sentiments, lauding Southee’s statesmanship: “Tim’s commitment to the team is the mark of a true leader, and his influence will continue regardless of title.”
Latham now faces the challenge of leading New Zealand against India, backed by an exciting squad of bowlers, including Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson, and emerging talents like Will O’Rourke and Ben Sears.
