After his blistering knock in Hyderabad, Indian wicketkeeper-batter, Sanju Samson was given a hero’s welcome by the Thiruvananthapuram MP, Shashi Tharoor on his return to his home town.
Samson who was under pressure due to his lack of runs, came out all guns blazing against Bangladesh in the final T20I at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Saturday (October 12) where he smashed his first T20I century.

As a result of his knock, India also smashed several records including their highest-ever T20I score (297/6) leaving the Bangladesh bowlers in tatters throughout the game.
Tharoor in a post on his official handle on X (formerly known as Twitter) shared his excitement about meeting the Indian international batter along with some photos. The Lok Sabha MP welcomed the Indian cricketing star with a ‘ponnada’ (a special shawl used to honour the dignitaries at an event or during a visit).
“Delighted to give a hero’s welcome to “ton-up Sanju” as Sanju Samson returned to Thiruvananthapuram after his stunning century versus Bangladesh. Found a “ponnada” in the appropriate India colours to honour him with!” his post was captioned.
The 29-year-old batter is arguably one of the finest players to come from the Southern state of Kerala and has a massive fanbase, particularly from his home state.
Despite not getting a run of games with the national side, Samson could likely be backed by Gautam Gambhir and the skipper Suryakumar Yadav at the top of the order.
After a lacklustre start to the series, his mammoth knock resulted in the final game resulted in him being the top-scoring batter with a total of 150 runs. Now he would hope that he can continue getting a string of chances under the new regime and possibly go on to make a massive impact on the national side.
Samson could be back in action with the T20I side which will tour South Africa for a four-match series in November. But for now, the focus will be shifted to the Test side that will take on New Zealand in a three-match series starting on October 16.
