A morphed wedding picture, featuring former Indian tennis star Sania Mirza and Indian cricketer Mohammad Shami, took social media by storm. The doctored photo left the netizens confused if the two Indian athletes tied the knot. However, a fact-checking initiative from the Centre for Excellence in Journalism (CEJ) in Karachi, iVerify Pakistan, revealed the truth and quashed the rumours.
It was found that the image was fake, and a manipulated one, from her wedding pictures with cricketer Shoaib Malik from April 2010. The photo first appeared on Facebook, captioned, “Sania Mirza married Mohammad Shami after divorce with Shoaib! Nikkah pictures viral, know the truth," before going viral on social media.
Meanwhile, Mirza’s father Imran has strongly reacted to the ongoing episode. Speaking to NDTV, he said that there is no truth to the wedding rumours.
“This is all rubbish. She has not even met him," Imran was quoted as saying.
Research conducted by the CEJ team revealed that the viral picture was an edited version of Mirza’s 2010 wedding photo with former Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik. The original image showed Mirza in a red wedding dress and Malik in a traditional white wedding dress. The viral image had Mohammed Shami’s face superimposed over Malik’s.
Mirza married Malik in April 2010. However, earlier this year in January, Mirza’s father announced on Instagram that her daughter and the Pakistan cricketer had been divorced for a few months. Malik has since married actress Sana Javed.
“Sania has always kept her personal life away from the public eye. However, today the need has arisen for her to share that Shoaib and she have been divorced for a few months now. She wishes Shoaib well for his new journey ahead! At this sensitive period of her life, we would like to request all fans and well-wishers to refrain from indulging in any speculation and to respect her need for privacy," an official statement from Sania’s family read.
