The greatest pain is coming so close to success and yet failing every time. This can shake a person to the core and weaken morale. Hardik Chandel’s journey strongly reflects this feeling. Since his engineering days, he aspired to join the civil services and wanted to crack the exam on the first attempt. This determination led him to take tuition classes during his final year of college, driving about 150 km from Kurukshetra to Delhi every week.
His efforts seemed to bear fruit when he reached the interview stage in the first attempt, as he had imagined. But fate had other plans. Hardik missed the mark by just 9 marks. Encouraged by his first attempt, many believed that he would succeed in his subsequent attempts. Hardik himself held on to this hope. Despite this optimism, he failed to qualify for the mains exam in the next attempt. It was then that Hardik began to understand the true nature of the UPSC journey.
Despite all the setbacks, Hardik remained persistent on the path he chose. He overcame his despair and stood firm. Finally, his efforts paid off in 2022 when he secured a place in the DANICS cadre. This year, he achieved remarkable success, achieving an All India Rank (AIR) of 304.
Hardik Chandel started his civil services journey in 2018 while completing his final years of engineering at NIT Kurukshetra. He took classes in Delhi and commuted to Kurukshetra every weekend to study.
He has appeared in the exam four times so far and cleared the prelims every time. Four times he qualified for the mains exam, three times he reached the interview stage and was selected twice.
In 2020, he cleared the UPSC CSE-20 prelims and mains on his first attempt but missed the final selection in the interview stage by 9 marks.
In his second attempt at CSE-2021, he qualified for the mains exam but failed to clear it. In his third attempt, CSE-2022, he cleared all the rounds and was placed on the reserve list. He was allotted to the DANICS cadre and posted in the Delhi Revenue Department.
He cracked the UPSC CSE-2023 exam again and secured an All India Rank (AIR) of 304 on his fourth attempt. He is likely to be selected for the Indian Revenue Service (IRS).
He said, “My journey has been quite distinctive. It has taught me profound lessons, especially the experience of being on the verge of success and then facing unexpected setbacks. It has made me realize the paramount importance of perseverance and the transformative power of resilience. These are the invaluable lessons I have learnt from this journey.”
