NEET Aspirant Dies by Suicide in Kota; 8th Case This Year

A National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) aspirant has allegedly died by suicide in Rajasthan’s Kota late on Sunday, making it the eighth case this year, reported Hindustan Times. The 20-year-old student was allegedly found hanging from the ceiling fan at his hostel, Kunhadi station house officer (SHO) Arvind Bharadwaj told the news agency. A native of Haryana’s Rohtak, the deceased was preparing for the medical college entrance exams in Kota for the past year.

The incident came to light after the student’s parents informed the hostel warden that he was not opening his door, the SHO told the news daily. The warden then called the police after the student did not open the door despite several knocks. After the police arrived, they broke open the door and found the boy hanging from the ceiling. No suicide note has been recovered. The student had been studying at a coaching centre in Kota for over a year and had been staying in the hostel since last July. Further investigation is underway, the report added.

The police further stated that the hostel the student was staying in did not install spring-loaded fans as directed by the district administration and an inquiry will be launched against the hostel authority for violating the rules, the news agency reported.

On March 28, another NEET aspirant from Lucknow was found hanging from the ceiling fan of her room. According to the police, a friend of Soumya (19), the deceased student, broke open the door at her PG accommodation after she didn’t answer calls for the past two days, only to find her hanging from the ceiling fan.

As many as 27 students have died by suicide last year in Kota.
