It has been a season of strong characters appearing on our screens, and if there’s an actor who has been consistently showing up, it is Tahir Raj Bhasin and it’s largely because of the diverse cinematic landscape that he’s traversing. From portraying the role of Sunil Gavaskar in Kabir Khan’s 83’ to playing a filmmaker with an extramarital affair with a movie star in Ranjish Hi Sahi or playing a helpless man sandwiched between his girlfriend and a politician’s daughter in Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhein to playing a gangster in the recently released action thriller web series Sultan of Delhi for which he is receiving a lot of accolades, Tahir Raj Bhasin has been doing some heavy lifting lately.
In an exclusive chat with News18, Bhasin says that he is in the best phase of his career. “Definitely this is the greatest phase when it comes to my work. I am elated with the response that the Sultan of Delhi has been receiving. It has been trending alongside Kareena Kapoor Khan’s project (Jaane Jaan) and Tabu’s work (Khufiya) so just to be counted among these stalwarts who I have grown up watching is an incredible validation.”
The actor, who hails from Delhi, started his journey in cinema playing an antagonist in Pradeep Sarkar’s crime thriller Mardaani alongside Rani Mukerji. The actor was later seen in Nandita Das’s Manto playing a flamboyant superstar in a bygone era. He followed it up with Nitesh Tiwari’s Chhichhore which was a huge box office success and even won the Best Film at the National Awards.
Bhasin says that with every role, he is trying to push the boundaries. “The easiest thing for an actor to do is to keep doing the same roles as it gets in instant work. I consciously try to play a variety of parts so that it doesn’t get boring for me. As an actor, that’s how I see it. I want it to be fun but challenging. I don’t want to be stereotyped; I don’t want people to say that this is something that Tahir only does. I want to do every genre and everything possible,” he said.
“The audience gets excited when you offer them something fresh. At the same time, I don’t want to get up and go to the sets and do the same mundane stuff, it starts showing in my work. Also, every part that I do has a different process. People often abuse the word ‘method acting,’ but that isn’t something that I have stuck to because I don’t think there is any one method. For example, reading the book (from which the show was adapted) was crucial for the Sultan of Delhi which I had not attempted before. I also had to put on 10 kgs in muscles to get the physicality right,” he added.
On the work front, Bhasin is looking forward to the second season of Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhein. Sharing an update he says, “We are in the final stages of locking the script and the recce for the location is on. We are hoping to go on floors very soon.
