'A Proven Goal-scoring Presence': Patrice Evra On Why Portugal Might Take A Huge Risk If They Bench Cristiano Ronaldo
Evra talked about how Ronaldo was constantly involved in finding open spaces for his side. He also talked about Ronaldo’s movement on and off the ball during the game.

Former France defender Patrice Evra said that Cristiano Ronaldo is crucial to Portugal’s attack in Euro 2024. Ronaldo was part of the Portugal team that claimed a 2-1 victory over the Czech Republic in Euro 2024. Despite not being on the scoresheet, Ronaldo created multiple chances in the game. Recognising the efforts, Ronaldo’s ex-Manchester United teammate Evra commended the legendary forward’s on-field brilliance. While speaking on Sony Sports Network, Evra said, as per news agency ANI, “Cristiano Ronaldo had a good game and was seen everywhere in the attack.”

Speaking further, Evra talked about how Ronaldo was constantly involved in finding open spaces for his side. He also talked about Ronaldo’s movement on and off the ball during the game.

“He was helping his team-mates with some passing and made great movements in the box to create an opening for his side. This is the kind of impact he brings to the Portuguese side.” Evra said.

Evra even pointed out that Ronaldo’s place in Portugal’s playing 11 should never be subject to question. As per Evra, the Euro 2016 winner’s presence alone can help create scoring opportunities. “Many debate about his position in the starting eleven, benching him risks losing a proven goal-scoring presence on the field,” Evra added. He also mentioned how stars like Ronaldo continuously look to hone their skills. “Players like Ronaldo always demand more from themselves. They want to improve match after match and perform at the highest level possible,” he said.

Speaking of the game, Ronaldo’s Portugal were dominant against the Czech Republic at the Euro 2024. The Roberto Martinez-coached side dominated the game with more than 70 per cent possession and eight shots on target. Despite the one-sided show, the Portuguese side was the first to concede a goal. Portugal found the equaliser moments later. Francisco Conceicao scored the winner in the 92nd minute to seal crucial three points for Portugal. They are now set to face Turkey at the Signal Iduna Park on June 22. A win will take them closer to a Round of 16 spot in the competition.
