New Delhi: The hunt for the country's best under-16 footballers started on Saturday with the launch of the FC Bayern Youth Cup scouting program in New Delhi, in the presence of former India skipper Bhaichung Bhutia and Bollywood actor John Abraham.
The youth scouting program took place at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.
The best young Indian footballers will go on to represent the country at the FC Bayern Youth Cup, which will be held days after the Champions League final at the Allianz Arena in Munich in May next year.
The scouting program in India is an initiative taken by adidas, Audi and FC Bayern Munich to promote the game and give young talent the opportunity to experience the game at an international level.
The program is based on a highly successful format, designed to scout players in the Major League Soccer (MLS) in USA, which has helped the US to strengthen their footballing credentials over the past few years.
Unlike typical scouting programs, this one allows participants to choose the position they would like to play in and the preferred time slot as well, giving everyone a fair chance to showcase their skills on the pitch.
Keeping an eye on India's budding footballers will be two renowned and reputed coaches from Bayern Munich - Werner Kern and Sebastian Dremmler.
Kern was assistant coach for the FCB during the club's golden era when they won the Champion's League three times in a row.
There is no participation fee for attending the scouting program. Participants, who are between the age of 14 and 16 as on May 31, 2012, can register themselves for the scouting program.
