Manchester: Manchester United have said they do not expect Wesley Sneijder to join the club from Inter Milan before the end of the transfer window.
Although the Premier League champions did not want to go on the record, the official stance from Old Trafford is that the deal is not going to happen.
The information comes from boardroom level, with the chief executive, David Gill, giving his approval for it to be known that United are not actively trying to sign the Dutchman.
That position can feasibly change – Sneijder could, in theory, drastically lower his salary requirements and Inter may offer him at a reduced fee – but this is to be regarded as unlikely, according to United.
United have been talking to Sneijder since the end of last season but have been unable to fit his wage demands of around 12 million pounds a year. That United probably could overcome, but with a potential 35 million pounds transfer fee and you the cost to sign Sneijder for five years is about 95 million pounds.
Sneijder is already 26, so in five years his resale value will be very little. Even for a club as wealthy as Manchester United that amount for Wesley Sneijder is a little over the top.
