Manchester United Interested in Re-signing Former Loanee Sergio Reguilon Months After Letting Him Go: Report
According to sources, United are eyeing to re-sign Reguilon after releasing him in January earlier this year.

Manchester United are looking at the prospects of re-signing a former defender less than a year after letting him go. The Red Devils are currently looking to bolster their defence for the upcoming 2024-25 season. With limited options to choose from, a report from the METRO has now claimed United are eyeing to re-sign Sergio Reguilon after releasing him in January earlier this year.

“Manchester United have expressed an interest in re-signing Tottenham full-back Sergio Reguilon, according to reports in Spain,” the media outlet wrote. The defender was brought in from Spurs due to injury problems at Old Trafford and was let go in five months

Reguilon joined Manchester United from Tottenham Hotspur last season in September on a loan deal. The Spurs full-back was an urgent signing after the Erik ten Hag-coached side lost both Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia to injury. With no recognised left-back left to play, Reguilon seemed to be an ideal fit for the team at the time. After making just 12 appearances for the Red Devils, the Spurs loanee’s tenure was cut short in January. He just made seven starts for United before spending the second half of the season at Brentford. The decision of early contract termination was made after United’s medical staff felt both Shaw and Malacia would be fit for the second half of the season.

Reguilon has one year left on his Tottenham contract. However, the ex-Real Madrid player is poised to leave the club permanently as per a report from AS. While Reguilon will be looking to switch clubs, the full-back’s preference is to remain in the Premier League. Apart from Manchester United’s newly-formed interest, the Tottenham full-back is also on the radar of London-side West Ham. The club’s manager Julen Lopetegui had previously coached the player during his 2019-20 La Liga stint with Sevilla. At the time, Reguilon had established himself as a regular starter in the left-back position. He also helped his team to a Europa League title victory that season.

As of now, Manchester United are primarily pursuing the services of Matthijs de Light. Being one of the most sought-after defenders in 2019, the ex-Ajax defender had rejected moves to United and Barcelona to join Juventus. However, it has now been rumoured that De Ligt is trying to push through a transfer to Old Trafford in an attempt to revive his flatlining career.

It remains to be seen if the Erik ten Hag-coached side finds success in signing either of the two defence stars in the summer transfer window.
