Luciano Narsingh has come from rejection and injury to become one of the most important player for PSV Eindhoven, and on Tuesday he grabbed headlines by putting it across Manchester United in the Champions League group stage.
A lot of people expected PSV to give United a run for the money, but not many put their money on the Dutch side get past the English giants. But thanks to the India-origin attacker Narsingh's 56th minute header, PSV managed to edge past the Red Devils 2-1.
The 25-year-old, who was born in Amsterdam, Narsingh's grandparents were immigrant workers from Andhra Pradesh earning a living at the plantations in Suriname, a former Dutch colony.
Narsingh was part of Ajax’s youth setup, but he was considered too light to continue at one of the biggest club in Dutch league. He then joined Heerenveen at just 16 and in the next couple of years signed a professional contract with them.
He came into the limelight in the Dutch League in 2010-11 season when he made 24 league appearances scoring five times. But his standout season was 2011-12 where he struck 20 goals for his team, more than anyone else in the league, which triggered PSV to make a 4.1 million euro bid for the winger.
After representing the Dutch youth teams for a few years, he was called up to the senior set-up for Euro 2012. However, he did not get a game to play. Narsingh was also picked by the current Man United coach Louis Van Gaal, who was the Netherlands coach at that time, for World Cup qualifiers where he also scored his first competitive international goal against Turkey.
But due to injury he was not picked for the Netherlands World Cup squad and eventually lost his place in the team. And about two years from that time, Narsingh chose the most opportune time to make his presence felt once again at the showpiece European event.
