At a time when Dune: Part 2 is all set to enter its 4th week of release, having already crossed the $500 million mark at the global box office, director Denis Villeneuve is already talking about the third instalment. The sequel which recently theatres won major critical and commercial success, came with an ending that leads the audience into the second book of Frank Herbert’s series, Dune Messiah. Despite the prospects of a third film being in the pipeline, the director seems unsure about the same.
In a recent interview with Empire, Villeneuve revealed that he would only move forward with the third instalment after he can overcome one big challenge and make it a better film than the previous one.
Explaining that taking a step back from the franchise will be beneficial, given that he has already spent around six years for it, the director said that he wants to make it better than Dune 2.
“I felt that it was a good idea to move forward right after Part One. We were already designing, writing, etc. But it also meant that for six years I was on Arrakis non-stop, and I think it will be healthy to step back a little bit. First, make sure that we have a strong screenplay. The thing I want to avoid is not having something ready. I never did it, and now I feel it could be dangerous because of the enthusiasm. We need to make sure all the ideas are on paper. If we go back, it needs to be real, it needs to be relevant if ever I do Dune Messiah, it will be because it’s going to be better than Part Two. Otherwise, I don’t do it,” he said.
The remarks come at a time when the director had previously confirmed his plans to convert Dune into a trilogy.
Dune 2’s performance
Following the success of the first film, Dune: Part 2 recently hit theatres and has impressed a lot of audiences. The second part focuses on the first film’s cliffhanger ending, thus delivering a satisfying continuation that makes the wait worthwhile.
While Dune 2 continues the story arcs of characters like characters like Paul, Chani, Stilgar, Baron, and Lady Jessica, it also introduces new characters like Feyd-Rautha, Princess Irulan, and Margot Fenring.
