Margot Robbie, known for bringing the Barbie world to life, is now venturing into new territories with her production company, LuckyChap Entertainment. The actress is reportedly set to turn one of the most beloved video games, The Sims, into a feature film. She will be joined by Kate Herron, known for her work on Loki and Briony Redmanal, with whom she previously collaborated on an episode of Doctor Who.
As per a report in The Hollywood Reporter, while the content of the film is not known yet, it is expected that The Sims will be a unique blend of Barbie and Free Guy, the action comedy starring Ryan Reynolds.
The Sims made its debut in the early 2000s. Over the past two decades, the franchise has expanded significantly with numerous expansions released. Remarkably, The Sims series has surpassed 200 million copies in sales, solidifying its status as one of the most prosperous video game franchises in history. Published by Electronic Arts, players, known as Sims, assume control of virtual characters, guiding them through various aspects of life including work, relationships, and family.
The Sims doesn’t follow a fixed storyline, instead, it allows players to create their scenarios. Players can guide their characters through various life paths, from making them entrepreneurs to building families or even creating weird situations. With each expansion, the game introduced new themes, locations and life experiences. Players can even end their Sims to university or go on supernatural adventures. This open-ended game has endless possibilities.
Previously, there were intentions at Fox to adapt The Sims into a live-action movie back in 2007. Despite generating initial excitement, the project faced several hurdles and ultimately did not progress. Regrettably, the movie was officially cancelled in 2019 following the Disney-Fox merger.
The recent success of video game movies like The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Minecraft and The Lego Movie have paved the way for The Sims to take the spotlight with its cinematic rendition. Looking at The Sims’ fanbase and unique storytelling opportunity, the timing seems right to turn the game into a feature film. Meanwhile, the upcoming movie is still in its early stages and no cast has been attached to the project yet.
