Learning the Song
Start by listening to the melody. Check out the video below to learn it. For now, ignore the lyrics and clapping motions and just focus on the tune. Try humming along, and to help you remember it better, hum while you do your daily activities.
Learn the lyrics. Sing them with the melody of the song. If you are having trouble, play the video you found before and sing along. Here are the lyrics: Miss Mary Mack Mack Mack All dressed in black, black, black With silver buttons, buttons, buttons All down her back, back, back. She asked her mother, mother, mother For fifty cents, cents, cents To see the elephants, elephants, elephants Jump over the fence, fence, fence. They jumped so high, high, high They reached the sky, sky, sky And they didn't come back, back, back 'Til the 4th of July, ly, ly.
Memorize the lyrics. Listen to the song over and over again, and sing along. Also try reciting the song as if it were a poem. "Miss Mary Mack" should be easier to memorize than most, as some of it rhymes, and every line ends with the last word repeated three times. If you can't remember them, write the lyrics down. This helps commit the words to memory, and gives you the opportunity to look at them whenever you need to.
Learning the Hand Clapping Motions
Start with your hands together as if you are praying. Face your partner. This starting position comes before the song starts, and is simply a way to start your game, showing your partner you are ready to play. Once you get used to this clapping game, you may skip the starting position, if you'd like.
Cross your hands and place them on your chest. In other words, put your right hand on the left side of your chest, and your left hand on the right side of you chest. This should form the shape of an "X." Your partner should mirror your position. During this action, you should be saying the first word of the line you are on. When you are starting, you should say the word "Miss" in, "Miss Mary Mack, Mack, Mack."
Place both hands on your hips. Say the second word in the line, or if there is only one word left before the repetition of the last word, say the first syllable. When you are starting, you should say the word "Mary." Now put your hands together again like you did at the very start. Say the third word, or the second syllable in the word you said before.
Take you right hand out to meet your partner's right hand. Now say the first repetition of the last word. This last word will be "Mack" when you start. Repeat again, this time with your left hands meeting. Say the second repetition of the last word while doing this.
Take both hands and clap them with your partner's two hands. Unlike before, the right hand should go with the left, and vise versa. While you do this, say the third repetition of the last word. Afterwards, you can start again by crossing your hands and placing them on your chest, and so on until you get to the end of the song.
