Using Clary Sage Medicinally
Treat dry skin, rashes, and itchy or swollen skin with clary sage cream. Clary sage has been scientifically proven to improve the texture and condition of your skin and is especially useful in treating psoriasis. Combine 6 drops of clary sage oil with 1 fluid ounce (30 mL) of coconut oil then rub it directly onto your skin. Test a small area of skin with a little bit of the mixture before applying it to larger areas of your body. Keep in mind that clary sage is not a sure-fire solution for treating serious skin conditions. Talk to your doctor and/or dermatologist before using clary sage to treat skin issues.
Use clary sage to prevent staph infections. If you get a minor cut by a dirty blunt object, clary sage has been proven to help stave off multiple strains of Staphylococcus (including S. aureus, S. epidermidis, and S. xylosus). Stir 6 drops of clary sage oil into 1 fluid ounce (30 mL) of coconut oil and apply it to the affected area. Clary sage oil also encourages wounds, bruises, and burns to heal faster. Only apply clary sage to the wound after you’ve cleaned it. Don’t use it on deep puncture wounds. Make sure that you always wash your hands before and after caring for a wound as well.Warning: See a doctor for treatment if your wound does not heal or if you notice signs of an infection, such as redness, swelling, pus, or fever.
Diffuse clary sage to ease painful cramps during menstruation. Inhaling the scent of clary sage has been scientifically proven to help fight off depression, menstrual cramps, and other symptoms that arise during your monthly cycle. Put 4 to 6 drops into an oil diffuser or blend 6 drops of clary sage oil with 1 fluid ounce (30 mL) of coconut oil and rub it onto your lower abdomen to ease cramps. You can also add 4 to 6 drops of clary sage oil to warm bath water. Keep a bottle of clary sage essential oil with you and sniff it for on-the-go relief. Lavender and rose oil can also help to relieve cramps, so try adding a few drops of each of these if clary sage alone does not help.
Decrease stress and depression by diffusing clary sage oil. Many studies have shown that clary sage can reduce stress-causing cortisol and symptoms of depression when inhaled via an oil diffuser. Simply add 2 to 6 drops to an essential oil diffuser along with ⁄4 to ⁄2 c (59 to 118 mL) of water. Always talk to your doctor about using clary sage for depression. If you have severe depression, don’t rely on clary sage alone to ease your symptoms. Inhaling the diffused oil increases your brain’s concentration of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), which is a precursor to serotonin. Add 8 to 12 drops of clary sage and 16 fluid ounces (470 mL) of water to a spray bottle to use it as a room or furniture spray.
Using Clary Sage Cosmetically
Get rid of dandruff with a hot clary sage oil treatment. Clary sage’s antifungal and antibacterial properties can help treat a dry, flaky scalp. Mix together 4 teaspoons (20 mL) of jojoba oil, 3 drops of clary sage oil, 2 drops of cedarwood or sandalwood oil, and 5 drops of lavender oil. Use your fingers to massage 2 teaspoons (9.9 mL) of the mixture into your scalp. Soak a small towel or washcloth in hot water and wring it out until it’s not dripping then wrap your head it for 1 hour before shampooing your hair. You can reapply the mixture 2 or 3 times during a single treatment. Once the towel cools, remove it and massage the mixture into your scalp again before wrapping it with the hot (reheated) towel. Do this treatment once every two weeks to prevent dandruff.
Treat acne with topical clary sage serum. The antiseptic and antibacterial properties in clary sage have been scientifically proven to help clear up acne and breakouts. Simply combine 1 fluid ounce (30 mL) of jojoba oil, 4 to 8 drops of tea tree oil, and 4 to 8 drops of clary sage oil in a small jar or bottle with a lid. Shake it well and apply a pea-sized amount to pimples and breakouts. You can apply it on top of your regular moisturizer or in place of moisturizer. Clary sage oil will also help with oily or greasy skin.Tip: Talk to your doctor and/or dermatologist about using clary sage to treat acne. Ask if it’s okay to combine clary sage with any other acne treatments you’re using.
Use clary sage to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Combine 2 tablespoons (30 mL) of coconut oil, 1 tablespoon (15 mL) of sweet almond oil, and 1 tablespoon (15 mL) of grated cocoa butter in a small pan. Heat it over low heat, stirring the mixture until it’s well combined. Remove the pan from heat and stir in 6 drops of clary sage oil and the contents of 1 capsule of vitamin E. Transfer the mixture to a small jar with a tight-fitting lid and allow it to cool overnight at room temperature before using it. Applying a small amount to your face, neck, and/or under-eye area after cleansing your face at night can help reduce the appearance of wrinkles, but keep in mind that it won’t get rid of wrinkles. Clary sage has antioxidant properties, preventing your skin from being damaged by free radicals. This cream is great for sensitive skin.
