Herbs & Plants to Attract Love
Rose Since the early days of Greek and Roman mythology, people have associated roses with Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love. In one famous myth, Aphrodite pricks herself on a rose while rushing to save her lover Adonis (thus creating the red flower we all know and love). While this myth doesn’t have the happiest ending, the rose has become a pervasive and uplifting symbol of romantic love over time. Great for: Romantic love, self-love
Lavender Sure, lavender is excellent for relaxation and sleep—but did you know it’s also associated with love? People have allegedly used the sweet-smelling herb to attract suitors, or have combined lavender with rosemary to protect their sexual purity. No matter how you spin it, this multi-purpose herb is a great plant to have on hand for any kind of love magic. Great for: Romantic love, purity, protection in a relationship, self-love
Lemon balm As the legend goes, going about your day while carrying this herb can help summon romantic love into your life. Apparently, it’s also possible to create a love potion by steeping lemon balm in wine for a few hours. Straining out the herb provides you with an elixir that you can drink with your friends who are looking for love. Great for: Romantic love
Cinnamon While not specifically associated with love, cinnamon is a great herb to use in a variety of spells (including those related to love). Generally speaking, magic revolves around intent—cinnamon is great for boosting this intent. This may help make your love magic more effective. Great for: Strengthening love magic, self-love
Basil Basil is commonly associated with loyalty and fidelity, and can be used in a variety of different love magic. Some practitioners, for instance, leave a bowl of fresh basil lying around to help maintain loving vibes around their homes. Great for: Fidelity
Rosemary Although rosemary is most well-known for representing traits like remembrance and commitment, it’s also a powerful symbol of loyal, long-lasting love. A common herb to be found in wedding and bridal arrangements, it’s no wonder that this simple, aromatic herb has such powerful connotations for love and romance. Great for: Devoted, long-lasting love; self-love
Ginger Ginger can help with more than an upset stomach—according to some magic practitioners, it can help bring a touch of passion and romance to your relationship. With this in mind, ginger-related magic can be especially useful before a first date or another type of romantic venture. Great for: Passion
Mint This herb isn’t just a delicious tea ingredient—apparently, it’s also great for inspiring sensual, and lustful feelings. As an added bonus, mint can also serve as a protective herb when you’re traveling from place to place (like on a honeymoon or other romantic trip). Great for: Passionate love, self-love
Meadowsweet From a magical perspective, meadowsweet is all about breaking down walls, encouraging the soul to be more open and welcoming, and promoting happiness. It’s no wonder that this herb is so commonly associated with love potions and magic! Great for: Happiness in love
Hawthorn Historically, hawthorn is associated with both purity and fertility—strange, right? Still, this herb could be helpful to have on hand if you have your heart set on a pure, devoted relationship that could eventually lead to something more. Great for: Purity, fertility
Bay leaves Well-established as a motif of victory and success in Greek mythology, bay leaves also offer a protective element—especially when it comes to love. According to magic practitioners, bay leaves can be an effective way to clear away negativity, refresh your mind, and boost your confidence. Great for: Protection and clarity in love
Patchouli Known for its earthy scent, patchouli offers plenty of helpful traits when it comes to love potions and spells. It’s associated with fertility as well as lust, and it can be a great ingredient for boosting attraction, sensuality, and love in a person’s life. Great for: Inspiring attraction, and lust
Nutmeg Overall, nutmeg can be used for a wide variety of magical purposes—including love. Mixing this warm, spicy herb into your potions and magic can be a great way to boost the feelings of love in an existing relationship. Great for: Assisting love in ongoing relationships

As you perform your next love spell or another magical ritual, incorporate clove to help bring love into your life and/or strengthen your bond with your love interest or partner. Great for: Attracting and strengthening love
Ways to Use Love Magic
Honey jar spell Create a honey jar spell by jotting down your love interest’s name on a piece of paper 3 times. Then, write out the type of relationship you’d like to have with this person, like “I would like to start dating and have a long-term relationship with __.” Fold up the note 3 times exactly and tuck it into a brand-new jar of honey. At this point, prepare a cup of tea for yourself, mixing in 1 US tbsp (15 mL) of honey. To complete the honey jar spell, say “As I drink this tea, you’ll become delicious to me.” Make other love jar spells to address other types of relationship desires. For instance, you could make a sugar jar spell to help welcome in a warm and exciting relationship, or create a self-love jar spell as a means of self-care.
Love potion tea Make your own tea blend using dried rose petals, white peony tea leaves, pink peppercorns, cardamom pods, marshmallow root, and rosehips. Let the tea steep in a mug of hot water for 4-6 minutes. As you sip your tea, perform a love-inspired ritual, like manifesting love with rose quartz. You could also repeat affirmations and use visualization techniques to help attract love into your life.
Self-Love potion Take a large spoonful (around 1 tbsp) of both dried rose petals and dried hibiscus petals and let them steep for around 10 minutes in a covered mug filled with 1 c (240 mL) of hot water. Then, stir in 1 US tbsp (15 mL) of coconut butter, ⁄2 tsp (2.5 mL) of vanilla extract, ⁄2 tsp (2.5 mL) of honey, ½ tsp (1.4 g) of cinnamon, and ⅛ tsp (0.25 g) of cardamom. As you enjoy your potion, get comfy in front of a mirror while drafting a kind, love-filled note to yourself.
Love oil Smudge a clean jar with sage; then, fill the jar with dried hibiscus, rosemary, dried rose petals, entire cloves, dried rose petals, and a cinnamon stick. As you add each ingredient to the container, repeat an affirmation like “I deserve love” or “I am loved.” Once the jar is filled, pour olive oil on top, seal the container, and give it a good shake to mix everything. Wait at least 2 weeks before using the oil—you might sprinkle a few drops into your bath, or incorporate it in your candle magic. It can help to offer a message of thanks as you finish combining the herbs with the oil. As the herbs infuse, give the jar another good shake and meditate on feelings of self-love. This jar can be as large or as small as you want. The amount of ingredients you use will ultimately depend on the size of your container.
Love bath Fill up a big pot with around ⁄2 US gal (1.9 L) of water and fill it with the herbs and plants of your choice. Let them steep for around 10-15 minutes. Then, set up and light a white candle in the bathroom while pouring warm water into the tub. At this point, strain the herbs out of your water and carefully pour it over yourself, all while you think or speak aloud your love-related petitions. Take some time to relax in the warm water, requesting that the Universe uses this bath to cleanse you on your journey of finding attraction and love. Make sure the herbal water has cooled down to a comfortable temperature before using it in your spiritual bath. Hop in the shower beforehand—this type of bath is meant to help you cleanse yourself spiritually rather than physically.
