Wayanad: Skipper Sachin Baby led from the front with an unbeaten double century as Kerala took a big first-innings lead of 177 runs in their Group C Ranji Trophy match against Hyderabad on Tuesday.
Replying to Hyderabad’s 270 all out, Kerala rode on Baby’s monumental 200, which came off 361 balls, to take control of the match at the Krishnagiri Stadium.
Kerala declared their innings at 447 for seven in 158 overs.
Needing another 173 runs to make the hosts bat again, Hyderabad were four for no loss in two overs at stumps on the third and penultimate day.
During his knock, which had 17 hits to the fence along the ground and three sixes, the 25-year-old Baby shared 183 runs for the seventh wicket with K S Monish (61) and then another unbroken 114 runs for the eighth wicket with Unnikrishnan Manukrishnan (32 not out), helping the hosts to a position of strength.
Kerala resumed their innings at overnight 179 for six with Baby and Monish batting on 41 and 3 respectively.
Ashish Reddy was the best Hyderabad bowler, returning figures of 3 for 76, while Ravi Kiran picked up 2 for 89.

Kalsi ton give Himachal Pradesh first innings lead
Ankit Kalsi scored a century to enable Himachal Pradesh take a 20-run first innings lead over Goa. Kalsi (115) played a sheet anchor role along with Rashmi Parida (88) as they both added 166 runs for the fourth wicket. The visitors were 377 for nine at stumps in response to Goa’s 357.
After a patient knock, Kalsi became Gauresh Gawas’ third victim when he edged one to Sagun Kamat at slips. His innings was highlighted by 15 fours. Bipul Sharma(37) and Karanveer Singh(27) then overhauled Goa’s first innings total. Gawas was the most successful bowler for Goa, taking three wickets for 73.

Fifty-up Paliwal leads strong Services reply
Services batsman Rajat Paliwal hit an unbeaten 72 to lead the teams’ strong reply against the Mohammad Kaif-led Andhra Pradesh.
Starting the day on 53 for one in response to Andhra’s 234 in the first innings at the Palam Grounds in the four-day encounter, the Yashpal Singh-led Services were 218 for four at stumps, a trail of 20 runs.
After a fighting 47 from opener Soumik Chatterjee, Paliwal and Yashpal got down to business with an 89-run fourth-wicket partnership to make the Andhra bowling look ordinary. Paliwal, who is still unconquered, registered his seventh first-class fifty in an innings laced with eight boundaries.
Yashpal also batted with purpose in his 80-ball stay and hit 11 fours before being scalped by Andhra pace spearhead Paidikalva Vijaykumar, who has picked two wickets so far.
Earlier, Services had made a brave comeback after restricting Andhra to 234 all out from a position of strength (160 for 3).

Tripura in a chance for a win against Jharkhand
Tripura placed themselves in a strong position to force a win over Jharkhand as they piled on 362 all out in their first innings before their bowlers reduced the home side to 127 for 5.
Resuming the penultimate day at 227 for six, Tripura added another 135 runs today with overnight batsmen Abhijit Dey (65) and Kaushal Acharjee (61) hitting half centuries.
Captain Dey and Acharjee shared 111 runs for the seventh wicket as Tripura took a 220-run first innings lead. Dey consumed 204 balls for his 65 which he made with the help of seven boundaries while Acharjee’s 61 came from 133 balls and was studded with six fours and a six.
For Jharkhand, Shahbaz Nadeem grabbed four wickets for 68 while Samar Quadri got three wickets. In their second innings, Jharkhand top order crumbled as the home side were reduced to 41 for four in the 15th over before Ishank Jaggi and Kumar Deobrat (45) stitched 75 runs together for the five wicket to do a bit of repair work.
At the draw of stumps, Jaggi was batting on 32 while Kaushal Singh was giving him company on nine. Jharkhand now trail by 93 runs with just five second innings wickets in hand.
