‘The Gentleman’ (1994): Who can forget AR Rahman’s awesome composition ‘Roop suhana lagta hai’ from this film! With Chiranjeevi as the chief agarbatti maker-by-day-and-daredevil-thief-by-night, the film was a great taste of the Tamil style of filmmaking for the rest of India. The Hindi version was directed by Mahesh Bhatt, but the original one in Tamil was by Shankar.
‘Indian’ or ‘Hindustani’ (1996): Kamal Haasan as the avenging angel, bent on weeding out corruption in the country; it can’t get better than this. In the mid ’90s, the make-up that Haasan sported, playing a 70-year-old former freedom fighter was simply awesome. The movie was fabulous, but we haven’t been able to figure out the meaning of the song, ‘Telephone dun mein hasne waali’. How does one do that? Laugh like a telephone, we mean.
‘Nayak: The Real Hero’ or ‘Mudhalvan’ (2001): Anil Kapoor as Shivaji Rao becomes the Chief Minister for ONE day and brings about a change that was unheard of before. Boom. Does it get any better than this?
‘Boys’ (2003): This was the ultimate coming-of-age film for the Telugu and Tamil-speaking audience. A bold film for its time, it touched on themes such as alcoholism, love, sex, prostitution, rebellion, and of course, love.
