NAMAKKAL: In a fresh crackdown 12 illegal dyeing units that were found to be discharging untreated effluents into water bodies in the district were dismantled by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) on Thursday.According to district environmental engineer (DE) K Gokuldass, “As many as six winches, three generator sets were dismantled and 76 cement tanks were demolished on Thursday.” The illegal units were located at Kamaraj Nagar, Eswari Nagar, Kottaimedu and Thanneerpanthalkadu in Kumarapalayam, the DE told Express.Tension prevailed for a while after owners of some dyeing units at Kottaimedu and Thanneerpanthalkadu objected to the TNPCB action, sources said. Police personnel subsequently rushed to the spot and diffused the situation. The police have been instructed to register cases against those who try to interfere with the drive, Gokuldass said.
