CHENNAI: Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Saturday informed the State Assembly that as many as 27,268 complaints regarding land grabbing have been received so far at the special cells established in all districts and 1,256.5 acres of land, 4,35,333 sq ft of house plots, altogether worth rs 696 crore, have been restored to the original owners. She was replying to the discussion during the motion of thanks to the Governor’s address. On the charge that law and order situation is deteriorating, the CM said this was wrong and in fact, the situation had been improving. Crimes taking place due to family feuds, money transactions and other stray incidents cannot constitute a decline in law and order generally. In this connection, Jayalalithaa pointed out that in the first five months of 2011, only 193 people were arrested under Goondas Act. But from June to December, 1,397 people have been arrested under it. As far as the number of murders committed for gain is concerned, it had come down by 19.6 per cent in 2011 from that in 2010.
