In the midst of the floods in Chennai, tragedy hit a private hospital in the city. 14 patients in the intensive care unit died at the Madras Institute of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (MIOT) hospital in Chennai allegedly due to power and oxygen failure. The patients were on the ventilator and reportedly died after their oxygen cylinders failed to work.
However, Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan denied any such incident but added that a probe will be ordered into the case. He said that the patients were in a highly critical state and died over a course of 2-3 days and not because of power failure.
Sources say that the incident happened as the generator was in the basement which was flooded. Doctors had an idea that the water level was going up and generator will go off. It was also discussed that patients on ventilator and critical care (17+1) can be air lifted. But it was not considered to be a viable solution as many had TB and other ailments and wouldn't be able to withstand that rescue. Everybody knew the end was coming.
The State Health Secretary also said that nearly 50 patients in the MIOT hospital have been moved out and taken to a nearby government hospitals.
The Health Secretary also said that he visited the hospital along with the Health Minister and the evacuation is on. "We have made all possible arrangements to provide proper health care to people at all the hospitals," he said.
