1993 Bombay serial blasts: Sanjay Dutt applies for parole for 10 days
The 53-year-old actor was held guilty by the TADA court in 2007 under the Arms Act for arms possession.

Mumbai: Actor Sanjay Dutt, who is currently at the Yerwada central prison in Pune, has applied for a parole for 10 days. The actor is serving out the remainder of his 5 year sentence in the 1993 Bombay blasts.

The 53-year-old Dutt was held guilty by the TADA court in 2007 under the Arms Act for possession of an automatic rifle, but he was acquitted under the stringent TADA (Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act), with the trial judge observing that he was not a "terrorist". The court accepted his confessional statement that he had procured the weapon for self-defence during the riots.

The Supreme Court, had in July dismissed Dutt's curative petition seeking review of his conviction in the 1993 Bombay blasts case bringing an end to all legal options before him. Dutt had filed a review petition in the Supreme Court challenging his conviction and five-year jail term in the blasts case.

The legal team of Dutt's had filed a petition contending that the confession made under TADA cannot be treated as evidence for offences under other Acts when the accused has been acquitted under TADA.
