New Delhi: Two army Majors and a terrorist have been killed in an ongoing gun-battle in the Tanmarg area of North Kashmir.

Three soldiers have also been injured in the encounter that began at 11:00 pm on Tuesday night.

"The 30-hour long gun battle has ended. Two army majors and nine militants have died," police officer Imtiaz Ahmed said.

Major Raman, who was critically injured in the encounter, succumbed to injuries at an army base hospital Wednesday morning. Another army official, Major K P Vinay, died in firing.

Security forces had launched a search operation following information about the presence of militants in the forest area.

Four soldiers and a major were also hurt in the battle, one of the fiercest in Kashmir in recent months. Reinforcements have been sent.

Army spokesman Anil Mathur said the clash erupted when troops surrounded a militant hideout on Tuesday morning after being tipped off by intelligence sources.

"We are trying to ascertain the identity of the slain militants," the police official said, adding that the group had recently infiltrated into Indian Kashmir from the Pakistani zone of the disputed region.

Indian Kashmir, where terrorists have been battling Indian rule since 1989, routinely witnesses an upsurge in violence during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.

At least 42,000 people, more than a third of them civilians, have died in the conflict, according to official figures.
