Kozhikode: The 24 persons sentenced to life imprisonment in connection with the 2003 communal violence at Marad that claimed nine lives, surrendered before a trial court in Kozhikode on Friday as per a High Court directive.
All of them surrendered before the Kozhikode Additional Sessions Court.
On August 16, the High Court had sentenced the 24 to life imprisonment, setting aside their acquittal by a lower court.
The court had partially allowed an appeal by government challenging acquittal of 76 of 139 accused by a special court in Marad.
The Marad court in Jan 2009 had awarded life imprisonment to 62 accused and five year imprisonment to another.
The High Court had however rejected government's plea for death sentence to at least 13 accused who were given life imprisonment earlier by the special court.
Challenging their sentence, the 62 convicts had also approached the court, which was turned down by the bench.
The case relates to the May 2003 communal violence, the worst-ever in the state's history at Marad beach here in which eight persons were killed. One assailant had also died in the violence.
