BANGALORE: Here is good news for poor and middle class families who do not have primary health centre (PHC) facility to avail treatment for various illnesses. The Department of Health and Family Welfare plans to relocate 32 PHCs existing in government hospitals for many years across the state.
If things go as per plan, the Health Department can utilise the services of 32 doctors, 60 nurses and around 100 staff members attached to these PHCs.These PHCs have been situated either at taluk or district government hospitals for more than 10 years. Based on the density of population, the state government had constructed 50 or 100bed hospitals at locations from where these PHCs were functioning. However, the authorities forgot to relocate these PHCs to places where such facilities are badly needed. T he PHC at Krishnarajapuram exists at the same premises where a 100bed hospital has been functioning since 2002. This PHC became redundant or a white elephant since no patient visited it. Many are not even aware of its existence at this hospital. Attempts were made to relocate this PHC but politicians played spoilsport to further their vested interests, says a gynaecologist on condition of anonymity. Many patients, especially from Ramamurthy Nagar, Kalkere and Hoody, opine that the purpose of having PHC would be served if it is shifted to Hoody or Ramamurthy Nagar.
