Rangiya/Guwahati: Normal life was paralysed in Assam's Kamrup and Goalpara districts following a 36-hour bandh called on Thursday by the Non-tribal Coordination Forum which was marked by sporadic incidents of violence.

The bandh, which began at five AM on Thursday, has been called to demand curtailment of non-tribal villages from the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council. The bandh supporters pelted stones and burnt tyres at several places along NH-37 disrupting traffic in both the districts, official sources said.

The bandh was total with all shops, business establishments, offices and educational institutions remaining closed. Meanwhile, the state government convened a meeting in Guwahati to discuss the holding of polls to the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council but some of the groups of the Council area did not attend the meeting as Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi was not present.

The meeting was chaired by Revenue Minister P Majhi and it discussed the possibility of holding elections to the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council in September. Rabha Hasong Peoples' Forum spokesman Anil Rabha said that they would launch an agitation if the Council polls were not held at the earliest.
