NAMAKKAL: Six persons, including a boy, were killed in a tragic mishap when a sports utility vehicle in which they were travelling turned turtle and rolled into a pit alongside the Namakkal-Karur by-pass on Sunday.Police sources said, the victims were identified as S Thirumurthy (55) from Atthur in Salem and his son T Balavignesh (13), M Subramani (70) from Peramnur, Salem, and his wife S Kamala (60), P Sampoornam (63) from Othangarai in Krishnagiri and R Saraswathi (50) from Pattanam in Rasipuram. The bodies were taken to the Nammakal GH for autopsy.Thirumurthy’s wife had a miraculous escape. Two others – S Balamuralikrishna (28), who lost his parents Subramani and Kamala and R Muthukumar – sustained serious injuries. Muthukumar has been shifted to a private hospital in Salem. Thirumurthy was a lawyer at the Atthur bar, while his son was a class VIII student of a private school near Kanthamapalaym.They were on their way to Paramathi Velur to attend a wedding when the accident happened near the overbridge in Nallipalayam.Superintendent of Police M Sathia Priya said, “Preliminary investigations revealed that Thirumurthy, who was driving the vehicle, lost control and hit the median before being thrown onto the right side of the road. The vehicle then rolled into the pit.” An inquiry is also being conducted.Namakkal DSP K S Subramanian who visited the spot said that Thirumurthy and Saraswathi died on the spot, while others were pronounced brought dead. Narrating how the accident happened, he said, “The tragedy occured fifteen minutes after leaving a hotel on Salem Road where they stayed overnight. It appears that the driver could not turn to the left, lost control of the vehicle that raced towards the right and rolled over several times.”
