Beijing: A strong earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale hit the southern Taiwanese city of Pingtung on Sunday. There were no immediate reports of casualties in the quake, whose epicenter was monitored at 22.8 degrees north latitude and 120.8 degrees east longitude with a depth of 20 kilometres, according to the China Earthquake Network Centre.
Taiwan's meteorological authorities said the epicenter of the quake, measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale, was 30.4 km northeast of Pingtung county.
