At least eight people were confirmed dead and more than 20 people were injured after a dilapidated building collapsed in Bhiwandi in Maharashtra on Sunday morning.

The rescue operations which started immediately after the incident came to an end on Sunday evening as all the injured and trapped were rushed to nearby hospitals.

The two-storey structure at Gaibi Nagar under Shanti Nagar police station limits in the town crashed at around 9.30 AM, Bhiwandi Tehsildar Vaishali Lambate said.

About 7-8 families were residing in the building which was repeatedly declared unsafe by the municipal corporation which had even asked the residents to vacate it, Thane collector said.

The water connection of the building was also cut, the official added.

After the incident firemen and the police rushed to the site and after almost 6 hours the rescue operations came to an end.

Nine of the injured were rushed to Thane Civil Hospital where they were being treated for their injuries, an official said, adding that one person has been admitted to a hospital in Bhiwandi.
