Karachi Former Pakistani scientist Abdul Qadeer Khan, who has confessed to leaking nuclear weapons technology to North Korea, Iran and Libya, was discharged on Sunday from a hospital after undergoing cancer surgery.
Khan, 70, had surgery last week for prostate cancer at the Aga Khan hospital in Karachi, Pakistan's largest city. Khan was discharged early on Sunday, a hospital doctor said on condition of anonymity because he did not have the authority to make media comments.
Khan was taken to his sister's home in an upscale residential neighborhood in Karachi where dozens of paramilitary troops and intelligence agents were deployed, a security official said.
No visitors aside from his family will be allowed to meet Khan, he added.
The military-run Inter-Services Public Relations Directorate said late on Saturday that Khan would stay in Karachi for "a few weeks for postoperative care under the supervision of the team of doctors who operated upon him."
"Dr Khan is in good health and has shown rapid recovery," the statement said.
Khan, considered the father of Pakistan's nuclear weapons programme, is regarded by many in the country as a hero despite his admission in 2004 of committing nuclear proliferation.
Since his confession, Khan has been living under virtual house arrest at his home in the Capital, Islamabad.
