The pulsating drumbeats of the DJ, the psychedelic lights on the runway and the spacious, light-filled gallery kept energy levels up throughout a fashion show held recently. Last Sunday saw the city’s fashion conscious gather at one of the swankiest hotels in the city, just to catch a glimpse of Chennai-based designer Sidney Sladen’s Spring/Summer 2012 fashion show. It wasn’t like any other fashion show, but a show of Sidney, put up for him and by him. Sidney’s Secret Garden – spring/ summer collection was staged by Uniq, the brainchild of actress Sona in the city in a bid to boost the city 's image in the global fashion market. For those who attended, previewing the designer’s latest inspirations was one thing; but witnessing a successful merging of style and function was another. The secret garden collection was a blend of western and Indian wear. Sidney presented well-thought-out designs of relaxed silhouettes, that were accentuated by clean tailoring and asymmetric draping. Sheetal, Jessie, Carol and Indrani from Mumbai and Delhi, were some of the top models who strutted down the runway in Sidney’s collections. The pieces possessed a super sleek yet bling factor, making a transition from day to night.Sidney’s play on the Indian wear was dressy and elegant. The heavily embellished outfits were studded with Swarovski crystals. He also showcased voluminous gowns and layered tank tops from a range of fabrics like lycra, georgette, lurex, raw silk and shaded georgettes, completing a refined and wearable collection. He said, “Fashion is a business! I need to cater to different people from various fields. So, I have to showcase an assortment of designs from traditional to western wear. And I follow the trend so my colour palette is vivid and vibrant. It is also suitable for the Chennai crowd.”Talking about his theme and collection, Sidney said, “It is not a happy garden; it’s a grey and eerie garden. Also, it is based on the mood swings of a woman. So, you will have most of the colours. In fact, the silhouettes vary from short skirts to maxi dresses. It is basically aimed at the confident women who want to dress up and look gorgeous.”Last, but certainly not the least, as the clock struck 10, the much-awaited lady in pink paraded down the ramp as the show stopper. Actress Trisha’s dramatic catwalk presentation drew some well deserved applause.   Of course, both expressed a considerable amount of affection for each other. However, there were power cuts that slightly disappointed some of those at the show.
