The 30-year-old drag-flicker is upbeat about his chances of making a successful comeback but Waseem's case is a feeble one.

Karachi: Penalty corner expert Sohail Abbas and former Pakistan captain Waseem Ahmed have been asked to join the preparatory camp in Abbottabad ahead of the national team's selection for this month's Champions Trophy in Spain.

Abbas said he has been playing competitive hockey in the Netherlands and was fit enough to play for Pakistan.

"Playing for Pakistan has been my proudest achievement and I hope to serve my country for some more years in the international arena," he was quoted as saying in The News on Friday.

The 30-year-old drag-flicker is upbeat about his chances of making a successful comeback.

"I am very happy that PHF president Tariq Kirmani has asked me to join the national training camp," said Sohail.

"I am confident that I will prove my fitness and hopeful of making a successful return to international hockey," he added.

While Abbas stands a strong chance to get back into the team, Waseem's case is a feeble one.

However, the veteran midfielder can be considered by the selectors as current captain Muhammad Saqlain, also a midfielder, will serve a three-match ban during the Champions Trophy and Waseem could be a good choice to replace him for the initial part of the tournament.
