An accused in several cases, who escaped from the police custody five years back, was nabbed along with his aide by the city Shadow Police team on Friday.

Muhammed Iqbal alias Ikku, of Taliparamba, Kannur and Musthafa of Neeleswaram,Kasargod were the arrested.

The police said that Iqbal escaped while he was being taken from the Central Prison, Kannur to Aluva to be presented before the court.

The accused were arrested from the city following a tip off received by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Putta Vimaladitya.

According to the police, both the arrested are history-sheeters against whom several theft cases are pending in various police stations.

Iqbal is accused in cases under Payyannur, Pazhayangadi, Neeleswaram, Taliparamba and Aluva stations.

After escaping in 2007, Iqbal went to  one of the Gulf countries, using a fake passport, and spent four years there.

After returning, he was living near Nalanchira here and carried out thefts in nearby areas where Musthafa was his accomplice.

They were held by a team led by Assistant Commissioner, Cantonment, Haridas. The accused were remanded to police custody.
