New Delhi: An Afghan national, accused of killing his compatriot, managed to flee from Delhi Police's custody by jumping out of a speeding train shortly after his arrest following days of absconding.
Hafizulla allegedly killed 24-year-old Sayed Azmarai, who used to earn money by resolving issues related to VISA and passports of Afghans, in south Delhi's Malviya Nagar area, police said.
Hafizulla had fled the national capital immediately after the incident. Earlier, the victim had deposited Rs 40,000 with Hafizulla for renewing his passport.
"At one point, the accused refused to return the passport. Instead, Hafizulla, along with one of his associates, eliminated Azmarai. The associate was arrested but Hafizulla managed to escape," a senior police official said.
Recently, police came to know that the accused was hiding in Pune and accordingly a raid was conducted and Hafizullah was arrested. He was being brought to Delhi on transit remand by a team including two constables, an Assistant Sub-Inspector and a Sub-Inspector, all posted at Malviya Nagar police station.
"At a railway station in Maharashtra, he escaped from police custody by jumping out of moving train on Saturday. He took advantage of getting permission to go to the urinal," police said.
Delhi Police Commissioner Alok Verma has demanded a report on the matter. Police said that its team, which was bringing Hafizullah back, will be acted against once it returns to the national capital.
