Like a story straight out of a film, a 52-year-old mentally ill man was reunited with his family after 26 years.

According to C Ramesh, joint secretary of the Tirupattur-based, State government-owned, Home for the Psycho-sociological Rehabilitation for the Mentally Ill, Chennabassayya Mallikarjunayya Hiremath was rescued from Vellore four years back and was admitted to the home. Last month,  Srinivasan, a visitor from Karnataka met Hiremath at the home and interacted with him, as he spoke Kannada. Srinivasan  then traced Hiremath’s family in Korawar of Bijapur district, and informed them about Hiremath. On Tuesday, he brought 14 of Hiremath’s family members, including his wife Gurulingamma, son Saranabasayya,  and brothers to Tirupattur.

When Hiremath saw them, something seemed to have snapped in him and he started to recognise all of them. The family reunion was touching, recalled Ramesh.

The family members revealed that Hiremath, who was practicing as a homeopath doctor in the village, had left the family 26 years ago due to unknown reasons, and was untraceable. His son was six months old then. Ten years back, Hiremath was believed to have died in a road accident.

“I had an intuitive feeling that my husband was still alive, and I never removed the thali and mettu. Hiremath, who had forgotten Kannada after the years of separation, spoke to his family members like a child, recalling words slowly. Hiremath has been referred to a hospital in Bijapur, where he can continue his treatment.
