Patnaik to review security in the riot-hit areas. NHRC wants answers from govt

New Delhi: Orissa CM Naveen Patnaik will visit the violence-torn district of Kandhmal on Saturday.

He is scheduled to visit the victims of the communal riots in Tikabali and will also be visit slain VHP leader Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati's asharam in Chakrapada.

Patnaik is in the area to review relief operations and the security in Kandhamal.

Though there have been no fresh incidents of violence, curfew continues in nine places across the district.

The official death toll of Kandhamal violence has gone up to 12. Eight relief camps have been set up in which 7,000 people displaced by the violence have been put up.

On Saturday, the National Human Rights Commission asked the Orissa government to file a detailed report to it on the communal violence in the state.

The notices were issued to Chief Secretary and DGP of Orissa "calling upon them to submit a detailed report of the violence in the state since the killing of religious leader Laxmanananda Saraswati and four others," an official spokesperson said.

The Commission has asked for the report to be submitted within two weeks.
