London: A 72-year-old man has reportedly become Britain's oldest dad after his wife, 30 years younger to him, gave birth to a baby girl.

Ian McMean has become the father of Kate after his wife Claire gave birth at Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle.

Kate is Ian's fourth child -- with two brothers, Christian and Andrew, aged 47 and 42, from his first marriage and seven-year-old Kit with Claire.

"It's a bit like beauty and the beast at the moment. I am holding Kate, and she is so tiny. Claire's labour lasted all of 40 minutes, it was somewhat of a rush.

"I went to park the car at the hospital and when I returned the baby had arrived," the 'Daily Mail' newspaper quoted Ian as saying. Coming in at 6lbs 10ozs, the couple said they were over the moon to have added a baby girl to their family.

Ian and Claire, both professional artists where they live in Brampton, Cumbria, met when she was just 17 and he was 46, but it wasn't until later they got romantically involved.

They started dating in 1996, went on a business trip to South Africa in 2001 and got married while they were there.

"The age difference between us is huge and a little girl is good company for a mother. Our son Kit has just been looking at Kate and he keeps saying he's got a little sister to protect now, so it is a very nice thing," Ian said.
