CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Agricultural Council Act, 2009, brought during the DMK regime, will not be notified and the government would solicit the opinion of legal experts to ascertain if the legislation had to be annulled, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa informed the Assembly on Tuesday. Speaking on the demand for a grant for agriculture, S Gunasekaran of the CPI said the Agricultural Council Act should be taken back. “It enjoins the farmers to go by the counsel provided by those qualified in farming. This is not acceptable and should be taken back,” he said. In reply, Jayalalithaa said that according to the provisions of the Act, it would come into force only from the date it was formally notified by the government. “This government is not going to give effect to the legislation by notifying it. We will consult legal experts to find if the Act had to be annulled,” she said. According to the Act brought in by the previous government, no person other than those registered would be allowed to practice as ‘agri consultant’ in the state or render agricultural services.
