TIRUCHY: The ruling AIADMK on Sunday made it clear that it will contest the Pudukottai by-poll, which is necessitated following the death of CPI MLA SP Muthukumaran in a car accident.State Finance Minister and party’s senior leader O Panneerselvam, who spoke at a party meet in Pudukottai, exuded confidence that the by-poll result would be similar to that of Sankarankoil, which was won by the AIADMK.His remarks ended speculation of AIADMK leaving the seat for CPI, which contested as part of the AIADMK front during the 2011 Assembly elections. The CPI’s soft approach towards the ruling party during the Assembly session led to speculation that the CPI was hopeful of securing AIADMK’s support for the by-poll. The party members refrained from walking out of the Assembly, when other parties including the CPM, DMK and DMDK walked out last week. Other ministers too joined Panneerselvam in predicting a big win for the AIADMK in Pudukottai, making it clear that the AIADMK had already decided to contest the bypoll. Those who attended include Revenue minister KA Sengottaiyan, Adi Dravida Welfare minister N Subramani, Local Body Administration minister KP Munusamy and Electricity minister Natham Viswanathan.Munusamy said the Pudukottai result would be a precursor to the Lok Sabha polls. Viswanathan went a step further and spoke about the campaign issue. He said the opposition campaign would be centred around power cuts and the AIADMK leaders should explain to the people about the measures taken by the government to make TN a power surplus State within a year.
