New Delhi: He may have lost the people's vote in the US presidency to George Bush but Al Gore has won the race for the Nobel Peace Prize.

He will share the award with the UN Panel on climate change headed by Indian scientist Rajendra Pachauri.

Nobel Committee Spokesman Jan Egeland said, “The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2007 is to be shared in two equal parts between the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, IPCC, and Albert Arnold Gore Junior for their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change.”

From failed presidential candidate to Nobel Peace Prize winner Al Gore, former vice president to Bill Clinton, has come a long way.

In a statement he said he was humbled by the award conferred on him.

He said, "This award is even more meaningful more meaningful because sharing it with the IPCC - the world's pre-eminent scientific body devoted to improving our understanding of the climate crisis - a group whose members have worked tirelessly and selflessly for many years.”

Back in India, scientist Rajendra Pachauri, head of the UN Inter Governmental Panel on Climate Change, spoke of collaborating with Gore in the future. He credited his award to his team.

Both will share the award of $1.5 million. Gore has already indicated he will donate his share to the Alliance for Climate Protection - a non-profit organisation.
