The Election Commission of India has informed the Madras High Court that the facility of postal ballot during elections would be extended to all policemen in the State covered under the Representation of People Act.
The court disposed of a writ petition seeking a direction to the commission to declare all the policemen in Tamil Nadu police force as persons entitled to postal ballots. The order of first bench, comprising of Chief Justice M Y Eqbal and Justice A Arumugasamy, said the prayer, of the petitioner K Sivakumar was heard at length.
The counsel for the Commission produced on August 21 a letter by the Secretary of the Commission informing him that it had decided to extend the facility of postal ballot to all the police officials, except those on leave during the election period covered under the notification issued by the State government under Section 28-A of the Representation of People Act.
The order said no direction needed to be issued, and disposed of the petition.
